Alistair’s Legacy: Championing Patients with Additional Needs

Behind every story of congenital heart disease lies not only medical complexity but also the deeply personal experiences of families. Alistair’s journey was shaped not just by his diagnosis but by his identity — born with both Down Syndrome and congenital heart disease, he faced challenges with a courage that inspired everyone around him. Though he sadly passed away in December 2023, Alistair’s life continues to create change, driving greater inclusion and support for patients with additional needs.

 

A Brother’s Tribute

Alistair’s story is told with love by his sibling, who describes him as “truly inspirational” and the reason they chose to become an advocate within the Patient and Public Voice (PPV) Group. His presence in their lives was transformative, instilling in them the motivation to ensure that all patients — especially those with learning disabilities or neurodiverse needs — have their voices heard within the healthcare system.

 

The Birth of the Learning Disability Forum

Out of Alistair’s journey grew the Learning Disability Forum, a dedicated initiative within the PPV Group. The forum provides a vital space where patients with additional needs, alongside their families and carers, can share their experiences.

This platform ensures that hospitals and clinicians understand the unique requirements of patients like Alistair. From adapting communication methods to making hospital environments more accessible, the Forum is helping shape services that truly reflect the diverse needs of the CHD community.

 

Creating Positive Change

The Learning Disability Forum exists to:

  • – Amplify voices of patients with learning disabilities.

     

  • – Raise awareness within hospitals of the adjustments that make a real difference.

     

  • – Foster community, allowing patients and families to meet others with similar needs.

     

  • – Influence care, ensuring that patients with learning disabilities are included in decision-making about their treatment.

At its core, the Forum embodies the belief that everyone deserves not only excellent medical care but also dignity, inclusion, and understanding.

 

A Legacy of Love and Inclusion

Though Alistair is no longer with us, his legacy is profound. His life continues to inspire efforts to make healthcare more compassionate and inclusive. For his family, advocating for change is a way to honour his memory, ensuring that his story makes a difference for generations of patients to come.
