Pulmonary hypertension services
For Children
Pulmonary hypertension services are provided by Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London.
Children with suspected pulmonary hypertension should be referred in the first instance to a Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at either Alder Hey Children’s Hospital or Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital for a full assessment. If this is not possible then there should be a discussion and agreement with the Paediatric Cardiologist that a direct referral to GOSH is appropriate on an individual case by case basis. Great Ormond Street Hospital will accept referrals by letter or email. It is important to provide a thorough and detailed medical history including the results of any relevant investigations in order for the team at GOSH to be able to effectively triage the referrals. If an urgent referral is required they will accept telephone referrals but this must be backed up with the same written information and sent as soon as possible after the telephone call has been made.
Referrals should be sent for the attention of the Pulmonary Hypertension Team, to Dr Shahin Moledina or Dr Sadia Quyam. The preferred method is via email and to be sent to milica.ugrinic@gosh.nhs.uk or m.ugrinic@nhs.net
If the referral is accepted then patients are normally seen within 4 weeks. Some patients may be asked to attend an appointment that will last two days to ensure that a range of investigations can be completed as part of their assessment. Some patients may have a video call first followed by a shorter stay in GOSH. It is important to explain to families that their assessment may take place over a few days but will depend on each child and what is required.
Children who are under follow-up by GOSH can be seen closer to home at a pulmonary hypertension outreach clinic at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital with the specialist team from Great Ormond Street Hospital. This is to facilitate specialist care and monitoring closer to home.
